What is the best Shopify product title formula?
The formula that works across most niches is:
[Brand] + [Product type] + [Key attribute] + [Differentiator]
- Brand: your brand or the manufacturer’s, if shoppers search for it.
- Product type: the plain noun shoppers use: sweater, serum, charger, side table, coffee.
- Key attribute: the feature that most changes the buying decision: merino, vitamin C, 65W, solid oak, single origin.
- Differentiator: a short qualifier that separates it from your other products: lightweight, travel size, 2-pack.
Not every title needs all four parts. A short, readable title with the product type and one attribute beats a long string of keywords. The examples below use fictional brands.
What do good product titles look like by niche?
| Niche | Weak title | Formula title |
|---|---|---|
| Fashion | The Everyday | Northwind Merino Crew Sweater, Lightweight |
| Beauty | Glow Drops | Lumen Vitamin C Serum, 30 ml |
| Electronics | Power Brick Pro | Voltio 65W USB-C Charger, 2 Ports |
| Home | Oslo | Fjord Solid Oak Side Table, Round |
| Food | Morning Blend | Highland Single-Origin Coffee Beans, Medium Roast 250 g |
| Jewelry | Luna | Arden Sterling Silver Crescent Necklace |
Creative names are fine as a brand device, but put them after the descriptive words, for example “Fjord Solid Oak Side Table, Oslo Edition”. A shopper who has never heard of “Oslo” cannot search for it.
How long should a Shopify product title be?
Shopify itself allows long titles, but readability sets the practical limit. Collection grids, mobile screens and search results all truncate long titles, so the first few words do most of the work. As a rule of thumb:
- On-page product title (H1): short enough to read at a glance; most strong titles fit within about 70 characters.
- SEO title (page title tag): roughly 50 to 60 characters so it is less likely to be cut off in Google results.
- Google Shopping title: up to 150 characters are allowed, and attribute-rich titles are common there. See our guide to writing product data for Google Merchant Center.
In our 2026 study of 100 product pages from well-known Shopify stores, 31% of product titles failed or only partly passed our title check, and 44% had an SEO title tag that was missing, too long or identical to a generic default.
How is the product title different from the SEO title?
| Product title | SEO title | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Heading on the product page, collection grids, cart | Browser tab and search engine results |
| Where to edit it | Title field at the top of the product editor | Search engine listing section, lower in the product editor |
| Main reader | Shopper already on your site | Searcher deciding which result to click |
| Good practice | Clear and readable | Main search phrase near the start, brand at the end |
If you leave the SEO title empty, Shopify uses the product title, often with your store name appended by the theme. That is acceptable, but writing a dedicated SEO title lets you target the exact phrase people search, for example “Merino Crew Sweater for Men, Lightweight | Northwind”.
How do I write a product title step by step?
- Find the noun shoppers use. Type candidate words into Google and look at autocomplete and the titles of ranking products. “Hoodie” and “sweatshirt” attract different searches.
- Pick one deciding attribute. Ask what a customer checks first: material, size, capacity, compatibility.
- Add the brand where it helps. Lead with it if it is well known or if you resell multiple brands.
- Leave variant details out. Color and size belong in variant options, not the base product title. See how to set up variants.
- Read it on mobile. If the meaningful part is cut off in a collection grid, shorten it.
- Write the SEO title separately. Then write the meta description.
Which title mistakes should I avoid?
- Keyword stuffing. “Sweater Men Sweater Wool Sweater Winter” reads as spam to shoppers and search engines alike.
- ALL CAPS and symbols. They look promotional, and Google Merchant Center may flag excessive capitalization in feeds.
- Promotional text. “SALE” or “Free shipping” in a title goes stale and is not allowed in Shopping titles.
- Internal codes. SKUs and supplier references mean nothing to shoppers; keep them in the SKU field.
- Identical titles. Two products called “Classic Tee” compete with each other. Add the attribute that separates them.
- Changing handles carelessly. If you edit a live product’s URL handle, keep Shopify’s “Create a URL redirect” option checked.
Should titles be written for AI assistants too?
The same rules help. AI shopping assistants match products to requests like “lightweight merino sweater for travel”. A title that states the product type and the key attribute plainly is easier to match than a creative name. Back it up with the same facts in the description and structured data. Our guide to how AI shopping assistants pick products goes deeper.
How do I fix titles across a whole catalog?
Start with products that already get impressions in Google Search Console but few clicks; a better title and SEO title can lift click-through without any ranking change. Use Shopify’s bulk editor for small batches or a CSV export for larger ones (see bulk editing safely), and run a sample through the free product page grader to check title and SEO title together.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a Shopify product title be?
Keep the on-page product title short enough to read at a glance, usually under about 70 characters. Google Merchant Center allows product titles up to 150 characters, but the first words matter most because they are what shoppers see.
Is the product title the same as the SEO title?
No. The product title is the H1 on the page. The SEO title (page title) is set in the search engine listing section of the product editor and is what appears in Google results. They can differ.
Should I put color and size in the product title?
Usually not on Shopify. Color and size belong in variant options so one product page covers them. In a Shopping feed, each variant title can include its color and size.
Should I include my brand name in the title?
Include it if shoppers search for your brand or if you sell other brands. For an unknown single-brand store, lead with the product type and add the brand at the end of the SEO title instead.
