What is a meta description on Shopify?
A meta description is an HTML tag that summarizes a page. Search engines may display it under your page title in results. On Shopify, every product, collection, page and blog post has its own meta description field, labeled “Description” inside the Search engine listing section of the editor.
It is the most commonly neglected SEO field we see. In our 2026 study of 100 product pages from well-known Shopify brands, only 28% had a meta description that passed our check. 55% had one that was the wrong length or copied from the product text, and 17% had none at all.
Where do I edit the meta description in Shopify?
- In the Shopify admin, open Products and click the product.
- Scroll to Search engine listing and click the edit (pencil) icon.
- Enter the Page title (SEO title) and Description (meta description). Shopify shows a character count and a preview.
- Click Save.
The same section exists for collections, pages and blog posts. Your homepage meta description lives in Online Store › Preferences.
How long should a Shopify meta description be?
Google does not publish a fixed limit; it truncates snippets based on pixel width and device. Around 140 to 160 characters is a practical target: long enough to say something specific, short enough to usually display in full. Google may also rewrite the snippet using text from your page when it better matches a query, which is another reason to keep on-page copy clear.
What is a good meta description formula?
[Product type + key attribute] + [main benefit] + [one concrete detail] + [soft call to action or reassurance]
| Product | Weak | Better |
|---|---|---|
| Merino sweater | Shop our sweater. High quality. Buy now! | Lightweight merino crew sweater that stays soft and odor-resistant on long days. Machine washable, in 8 colors. Free returns within 30 days. |
| Vitamin C serum | Best serum ever for amazing skin. | A lightweight vitamin C serum for dull, uneven skin. Layers under moisturizer and SPF. 30 ml bottle, fragrance-free, made for daily morning use. |
| USB-C charger | Charger 65W fast charging cheap. | Compact 65W USB-C charger with two ports for a laptop and phone at once. Works with most USB-C laptops and phones. Foldable plug for travel. |
The examples above use fictional products. Notice that the better versions state facts a shopper can check. Avoid claims you cannot support, and keep shipping or return promises accurate.
How do I write one step by step?
- Start with the search phrase. Use the same main phrase as your SEO title, naturally, near the start. Google bolds matching words in snippets.
- State the benefit. What does the product do for the buyer?
- Add one specific detail. Material, size, capacity, number of colors, compatibility.
- Close with reassurance. Free returns, delivery time or warranty, only if true.
- Check the length and preview. Shopify’s preview shows roughly how it will look.
- Make it unique. Never reuse the same meta description across products.
What happens if the meta description is empty?
Shopify themes typically fall back to the first part of the product description. That text was written for the page, not for search results, so it often starts mid-thought or with a size chart. Google may then generate its own snippet. Neither is fatal, but a written meta description gives you control over the pitch searchers see before they click.
Do meta descriptions affect rankings?
Google has said for years that meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor. Their value is in click-through: a clear, specific snippet can win the click even when you are not the top result. For AI search, they are one more consistent summary of what the page is about, alongside the opening of the description and the structured data.
Which meta description mistakes are most common?
- Copying the first lines of the description, so the snippet duplicates the page.
- The same template for every product, with only the name changed.
- Keyword lists instead of sentences.
- Outdated promotions such as “20% off this weekend”.
- Very short descriptions that waste the space, or very long ones that get truncated before the key point.
How do I fix meta descriptions across hundreds of products?
- Export products to CSV as a backup.
- Prioritize products with impressions in Search Console and a low click-through rate.
- Use the bulk editor’s SEO description column for small batches, or CSV import for many products. See how to bulk edit safely.
- If you use AI drafts, review them for accuracy before publishing.
- Spot-check results with the free product page grader, which tests meta description length and duplication.
Pair this guide with the product title formula: the SEO title and meta description are read together in search results.
Should collection pages have meta descriptions too?
Yes. Collection pages often rank for broader, higher-volume searches than individual products, such as “women’s running shoes”. Write a meta description that states what the collection contains, the range (sizes, styles, price points) and a reason to choose your store, such as free returns. Keep it accurate as products change, and avoid naming a single product that may sell out.
What are the key facts to remember?
- The meta description field is under Search engine listing in every Shopify product, collection and page.
- Google may rewrite your snippet when page text better matches a query.
- Meta descriptions influence clicks, not rankings directly.
- Each product should have its own unique meta description.
- Bulk changes are possible through the bulk editor, CSV or apps.

Frequently asked questions
Does the meta description affect Shopify rankings?
Google says meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor, but they influence whether people click your result, and Google may show your description when it matches the query.
What happens if I leave the Shopify meta description empty?
Shopify falls back to the beginning of the product description, and Google may write its own snippet from the page. Both are usually weaker than a description written for search results.
How many Shopify stores have weak meta descriptions?
In our 2026 study of 100 product pages from well-known Shopify stores, 72% had a meta description that was missing, the wrong length or copied from the product text.
Can I edit meta descriptions in bulk on Shopify?
Yes. Use the bulk editor with the SEO description column, a CSV export and import, or an app that drafts unique descriptions and lets you review them before publishing.
