What are Shopify variants and options?
An option is a dimension a product varies by, such as Size, Color or Material. A variant is one specific combination of option values, such as “Medium / Navy”. Each variant is a separately purchasable item with its own SKU, price, barcode, weight and inventory. One product page shows all variants and lets the shopper choose.
| Term | Example | Has its own |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Merino Crew Sweater | Title, description, SEO fields, URL |
| Option | Color, Size | Name and list of values |
| Variant | Navy / M | SKU, price, barcode, inventory, image |
How do I set up variants on Shopify step by step?
- In the Shopify admin, open Products and choose or create a product.
- In the Variants section, click Add options like size or color.
- Enter the option name (for example Color) and its values (Navy, Grey, Oat). Add a second option such as Size if needed.
- Click Done. Shopify generates every combination as a variant.
- Delete combinations you do not sell, so shoppers never see unavailable choices.
- For each variant, set the price, SKU, barcode (GTIN, if the item has one) and inventory.
- Assign an image to each color variant (see below).
- Save, then preview the product and click through every option.
How do I add an image to each variant?
- Upload all photos for every color in the product’s Media section.
- In the Variants list, click the image placeholder next to a variant, or open the variant and choose its image.
- Pick the photo that matches that variant. With grouped variants, you can assign one image to all sizes of the same color.
- Give each image alt text naming the color, for example “Oat merino crew sweater, front view”.
- Preview the page: selecting a color should switch the main image. If it does not, check your theme’s product media settings.
Missing variant images are common even among strong stores: in our 2026 study, 16% of top Shopify product pages had variants without their own images. For the full picture, including what to do when you have no photo of a color, see variant images per color.
How should I name options and values?
- Use the same option names across the catalog. Always “Color”, never a mix of “Colour”, “Shade” and “Color”. Filters and feeds depend on consistency.
- Use plain value names. “Navy” is better than “Midnight Dream” for filters and Google Shopping; you can mention the creative name in the description.
- Order sizes logically: XS, S, M, L, XL, not alphabetically.
- Keep option order consistent: Color first, then Size, on every product.
How many variants can a Shopify product have?
For many years Shopify limited each product to 100 variants and three options. Shopify has since raised the variant limit for many stores, but limits and rollouts change. Check the Shopify Help Center for the current limit on your plan before restructuring a large catalog. If you hit a limit, split the product by a meaningful dimension (for example by material) and link the products together.
Should colors be variants or separate products?
| Variants on one product | Separate products |
|---|---|
| Reviews and links collect on one page | Each color can target its own search phrase |
| Simpler catalog management | Separate descriptions and SEO fields per color |
| Best for most apparel and accessories | Best when colors are marketed very differently |
Variants are the default choice for most stores. If you split colors into separate products, link them with a color swatch app or metafields so shoppers can move between them.
How do variants appear in Google Shopping?
Through the Google & YouTube channel, each variant can become its own item in Google Merchant Center, grouped by an item group ID. Each item should carry its own color, size, price, availability, GTIN and image. If variants lack images, Google may show the main photo for every color, which confuses shoppers. Our guide to Google Shopping feeds with variants covers this in detail, and writing for Merchant Center covers titles and attributes.
Which variant mistakes should I avoid?
- Leaving unavailable combinations live, which leads to dead ends at checkout.
- One shared SKU across variants, which breaks inventory tracking.
- Prices that differ between variants without explanation.
- Variant images assigned only to the first size of each color.
- Option names that differ product to product, which breaks storefront filters.
How do I check my variant setup?
Paste the product URL into the free product page grader. It checks whether variants have their own images and flags other product page gaps.
How do variants affect product page SEO?
By default, all variants of a Shopify product share one URL, and selecting a variant adds a ?variant= parameter. Shopify’s canonical tag points to the main product URL, so search engines treat it as one page. That is usually what you want: one strong page instead of many thin ones. Make sure the description mentions the available colors and sizes in text, so searches for a specific color can still match the page.
What are the key facts to remember?
- Each variant has its own SKU, price, barcode, inventory and image.
- Options are dimensions such as Color and Size; variants are combinations.
- All variants share one product URL with a canonical tag.
- Consistent option names make storefront filters and feeds work.
- Check the Shopify Help Center for the current variant limit.

Frequently asked questions
How many variants can a Shopify product have?
Shopify long limited products to 100 variants and three options, and has since raised the variant limit for many stores. Check the Shopify Help Center for the current limit on your plan before restructuring a catalog.
Why does the image not change when I select a color?
Usually because no image is assigned to that variant, or the theme only switches images for the first option. Assign an image to each variant in the product editor and check the theme settings.
Should colors be variants or separate products?
Variants by default: one page collects reviews and links for all colors. Separate products make sense only when colors are marketed very differently or need their own descriptions and search pages.
How common are missing variant images?
In our 2026 study, 16% of top Shopify product pages had variants without their own images.
