What is product schema?
Product schema is structured data, written in the schema.org vocabulary, that describes a product in a machine-readable way. Google recommends adding it as JSON-LD: a script block in the page’s HTML that lists the product’s name, images, description, brand and identifiers, plus an Offer with price, currency and availability. Search engines use it for rich results such as price and availability in listings, and it helps any system, including AI assistants, interpret the page accurately.
What does Product JSON-LD look like?
A simplified example for a fictional product:
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Product",
"name": "Merino Crew Sweater",
"image": ["https://example.com/navy-front.jpg"],
"description": "Lightweight merino crew sweater.",
"sku": "MCS-NAVY-M",
"gtin13": "0000000000000",
"brand": { "@type": "Brand", "name": "Northwind" },
"offers": {
"@type": "Offer",
"price": "89.00",
"priceCurrency": "USD",
"availability": "https://schema.org/InStock",
"url": "https://example.com/products/merino-crew-sweater"
}
}
Which product schema fields matter most?
| Field | Role | Shopify source |
|---|---|---|
| name | Required | Product title |
| image | Strongly recommended | Product media |
| offers.price, priceCurrency | Needed for price in results | Variant price and store currency |
| offers.availability | Needed for stock status | Inventory |
| brand | Recommended | Vendor field |
| gtin / mpn | Recommended where they exist | Barcode field |
| sku | Optional | Variant SKU |
| aggregateRating, review | Optional, only with genuine reviews | Reviews app |
Google’s Product structured data documentation lists the current required and recommended properties; check it when in doubt, because requirements change over time.
Does Shopify add product schema automatically?
Most current themes do. Shopify’s free Online Store 2.0 themes, such as Dawn, output Product structured data from your product data, and many paid themes do too. However, older themes, heavily edited templates and some page builders can output incomplete or duplicate markup. In our 2026 study of 100 top Shopify product pages, 18% had missing or incomplete Product structured data, and 89% had no FAQPage markup.
How do I test my Shopify product schema?
- Copy a live product URL.
- Paste it into Google’s Rich Results Test.
- Look for a detected Product snippet (and Merchant listing) item.
- Fix errors first: these can stop rich results entirely.
- Review warnings: missing brand, GTIN or review fields reduce what can be shown.
- Optionally use the Schema Markup Validator at schema.org for a general check.
- After fixing, use Search Console’s URL Inspection to request re-indexing of key products.
How do I fix common product schema problems?
- No Product markup at all: update to a current theme, or add a JSON-LD snippet to the product template, or use a reputable schema app.
- Duplicate Product blocks: an app and the theme both output markup. Keep one and disable the other.
- Price or availability mismatch: markup must match what the page shows; caching or custom code can drift.
- Missing brand: fill in the Vendor field on products.
- Missing GTIN: add barcodes in each variant’s barcode field when the product has one.
- Review markup without visible reviews: do not mark up ratings that shoppers cannot see on the page.
What other schema types help a Shopify store?
| Type | Where | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| BreadcrumbList | Products, collections | Shows the page’s place in the site |
| FAQPage | Pages with a visible FAQ | Marks up question-and-answer pairs; see FAQ schema guide |
| Organization | Homepage | Brand name, logo and profiles |
| Article | Blog posts, guides | Author, dates and headline |
| ProductGroup | Products with variants | Groups variants by size or color, supported by Google for variant markup |
Does schema help with AI search?
Google has said there is no special markup required for AI Overviews. Structured data still helps machines read your page unambiguously: a price in an Offer is a fact, while a price in a banner image is a guess. Consistency matters as much as presence: the same price, availability and identifiers should appear in your markup, on the page and in your Google Merchant Center feed. Read more in how AI shopping assistants pick products.
How do I check schema on many products?
Search Console’s Merchant listings and Product snippets reports summarize valid and invalid items across your site. For a quick single-page check alongside content, use the free product page grader, which tests Product structured data and FAQ markup together.
Should I add product schema with an app or by editing the theme?
| Approach | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Theme default | No extra cost, updated with the theme | May miss brand, GTIN or FAQ markup |
| Edit theme code | Full control, no app scripts | Needs Liquid knowledge; changes can be lost on theme updates |
| Schema app | No code, often adds extra types | Risk of duplicate markup; another app to maintain |
Whichever you choose, keep exactly one Product block per page and re-test after theme updates or app installs. A quick check is to view the page source and search for "Product": two separate Product blocks usually mean a duplicate.
What should the schema never contain?
- Prices, availability or ratings that differ from what the shopper sees.
- Reviews you wrote yourself or imported from elsewhere without showing them.
- Markup for content hidden from shoppers.
Google treats misleading structured data as spam and can remove rich result eligibility for the whole site.
What are the key facts to remember?
- Google recommends JSON-LD for structured data.
- Product markup should include name, image and an Offer with price, currency and availability.
- Most Online Store 2.0 themes output Product markup automatically.
- Google’s Rich Results Test checks a single URL in seconds.
- Duplicate Product blocks from a theme and an app can conflict.

Paste a product URL into Google’s Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator. Fix errors first, then warnings for fields such as brand or GTIN that improve eligibility.
