Shopify product FAQ sections: which questions to answer, with examples

Short answer

A Shopify product FAQ section should answer the four to six questions that stop people buying: sizing or compatibility, materials, shipping time, returns, care and how the product compares to alternatives. Take questions from support emails, reviews and search queries, answer each in two or three sentences, and mark them up with FAQPage JSON-LD.

Why add an FAQ section to Shopify product pages?

A product FAQ answers the questions that make shoppers hesitate, right where they hesitate. It reduces support emails, gives search engines and AI assistants question-and-answer content they can match to real queries, and adds useful, unique text to the page. It is also one of the most common gaps: in our 2026 study of 100 top Shopify product pages, 89% had no FAQPage structured data, making it the most frequently failed check.

This guide is about choosing and writing the questions. For the markup itself, see our guide to Shopify product FAQ schema.

Where do the best FAQ questions come from?

  1. Support inbox and chat logs. Questions customers already ask are the most valuable ones.
  2. Reviews. Complaints and surprises (“runs small”, “smaller than expected”) point to missing information.
  3. Return reasons. Each common reason is a question you could have answered up front.
  4. Search data. Google’s “People also ask”, autocomplete and Search Console queries show how people phrase questions.
  5. AI assistants. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity what people should know before buying your product type, then verify the answers against your product.

Which questions work for each niche?

NicheExample questions
FashionDoes it run true to size? Is the fabric see-through? Can I machine wash it? Does it shrink?
BeautyIs it suitable for sensitive skin? Can I use it with retinol? Is it fragrance-free? How long does a bottle last?
ElectronicsDoes it work with my device? What cable is included? Can I use it abroad? What does the warranty cover?
HomeDoes it need assembly? What are the exact dimensions? Is it suitable for outdoor use? How do I clean it?
FoodDoes it contain nuts? How should I store it after opening? Is it vegan? How long does it keep?
Any productWhen will it arrive? Can I return it? Is it available in other colors?

How do I write a good FAQ answer?

  1. Answer in the first sentence. “Yes, it runs true to size.” Then add the detail.
  2. Keep it to two or three sentences. Longer explanations belong in the description or a help page.
  3. Be specific. “Ships in 1–2 business days from our warehouse” beats “Ships fast”.
  4. Be honest about limits. “Not suitable for outdoor use” prevents returns and builds trust.
  5. Use the shopper’s wording in the question, so it matches how people search and ask assistants.

How many questions, and where on the page?

  • Four to six questions per product is usually right. Store-wide questions can link to a general FAQ page.
  • Placement: below the description and above reviews, often as collapsible rows, is a common pattern that keeps the buy button high.
  • Visibility: collapsed content is fine, but the questions should be visible and the answers present in the page HTML.

How do I add an FAQ to Shopify product pages?

  1. Theme collapsible rows. Many Online Store 2.0 themes, including Dawn, have a collapsible content block in the product template.
  2. Metafields. Store questions and answers in product metafields and connect them to the theme blocks, so each product shows its own FAQ.
  3. Inside the description. Simple, but harder to mark up and style consistently.
  4. An app that generates and displays product FAQs with structured data.

Whichever method you choose, add FAQPage JSON-LD that matches the visible questions exactly; see the FAQ schema guide.

Do FAQ rich results still appear in Google?

Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known, authoritative government and health websites, so most stores should not expect expandable FAQ snippets in search. The markup and content still have value: they make question-and-answer pairs explicit for search engines and AI assistants, and the content helps shoppers directly. Read more in how AI shopping assistants pick products.

What FAQ mistakes should I avoid?

  • The same generic FAQ on every product.
  • Questions nobody asks, written only to include keywords.
  • Answers that contradict the description, shipping policy or returns policy.
  • Marking up questions in JSON-LD that are not visible on the page.
  • Letting answers go stale when policies change.

How do I check my product FAQ?

Paste a product URL into the free product page grader. The FAQ check looks for FAQPage markup and the grader suggests a fix when it is missing. For conversion context, see our product page conversion checklist.

What does a good product FAQ look like?

An example for a fictional merino sweater:

  • Does it run true to size? Yes. It has a regular fit; size up if you prefer a relaxed look or plan to layer it over a shirt.
  • Can I machine wash it? Yes, on a cold wool cycle. Dry it flat to keep its shape.
  • Is it itchy? It is made from fine merino, which most customers find soft against the skin. If you are sensitive to wool, wear it over a base layer.
  • When will it arrive? Orders ship within 1–2 business days; delivery times by country are shown at checkout.

Each answer starts with a direct reply, adds one useful detail and stays short.

What are the key facts to remember?

  • Four to six questions per product is usually enough.
  • The best questions come from support emails, reviews and return reasons.
  • FAQPage markup must match the visible questions exactly.
  • Google limits FAQ rich results mainly to authoritative government and health sites.
  • Answers should start with a direct reply in the first sentence.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a product FAQ have?

Four to six is usually enough. More than that is better placed on a general help page, with the product FAQ focused on questions specific to that product.

Where should the FAQ go on a Shopify product page?

Below the description and above reviews is a common placement, often as collapsible rows. Shoppers find it when they scroll looking for details, and it does not push the buy button down.

Does Google still show FAQ rich results?

Since 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known government and health sites. FAQ markup still helps search engines and AI assistants understand the question-and-answer content.

How many Shopify product pages have FAQ markup?

Few. In our 2026 study of 100 top Shopify product pages, 89% had no FAQPage structured data.
